Paul Fights for Affordable Prescription Drugs

April 5th, 2000

Washington, D.C. – On Tuesday, Congressman Ron Paul wrote to his colleagues in Congress asking them to join him in working to insure senior citizens have access to affordable prescription drugs. Paul is the author of the “Pharmaceutical Freedom Act” (HR 3636) which will give seniors a tax credit equal to 80% of their prescription drug costs.

Paul said, “Many seniors are struggling to afford the prescription drugs they need, yet the federal government continues to impose taxes on Social Security benefits. I am proud to lead the effort to help seniors find affordable medicine with the ‘Pharmaceutical Freedom Act.’”

The “Pharmaceutical Freedom Act” will also help lower the price of pharmaceuticals by reducing barriers to importing FDA-approved prescription drugs. The bill also forbids the Federal Government from imposing costly new regulations on Internet sales of FDA-approved medicines by state-licensed pharmacists.

The “Pharmaceutical Freedom Act” tax credit for medicines is intended to supplement efforts to reform and strengthen Medicare by ensuring seniors have the ability to use Medicare funds to purchase prescription drugs. Paul is a strong supporter of strengthening the Medicare system to allow for more choice and consumer control.

Paul said, “Congress continually raids the Social Security trust fund to finance unconstitutional programs! It is long past time for Congress to choose between helping seniors afford medicine or using the Social Security trust fund as a slush fund for big government and pork-barrel spending. I call on every member of Congress to join me in standing up for our senior’s retirements and insuring they all have access to affordable medicine.”
